The very first of the Ten Commandments is, "You shall have no other gods before me (Ex. 20:3)." The second commandment is, "You shall not make any graven image (Ex. 20:4)." Idolatry extends beyond the worship of idols and images and false gods. Our modern idols are many and varied. Even for those who do not bow physically before a statue or carved image. Idolatry is a matter of the heart - pride, self-centeredness, a love for possessions or a thing and ultimately rebellion against God. What must we cast away so we can run with patience the race that is set before us?
